Course description
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a range of activities and functions within the weight management industry in a broad range of settings, including working collaboratively with appropriate medical and allied health professionals to help motivate and mentor adolescents 13 – 17 or adults 18+ to achieve their weight management goals.
Those with this level of competency will be expected to provide a range of programs and services including an understanding of psychology and the effect on behaviour, provision of appropriate meal plans and recommendation of exercise to create a weight management plan to achieve the adolescents’ (13 – 17) and adults’ (18+) weight management goals.
This is a nationally recognised program which will, on successful completion entitle the participant to an AQF certificated document
Course duration
The volume of learning for this course is course is 1145 hours. This consists of
- 795 hours of supervised instruction via online study with an assigned Tutor
- 350 hours of non-supervised activities including further reading and research
Non-supervised activities may be undertaken concurrently with supervised instruction.
The recommended maximum duration for completion of Certificate IV in Weight Management is twelve months.
Delivery method
This qualification is delivered in an online environment.
Pre-requisites
Academic requirements:
- Satisfactory completion of year 10 or equivalent
- Overseas students require a language proficiency of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
There are no specific academic prerequisites for any of the units in this course.
Other requirements
All students must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have a minimum of three years employment or volunteer experience in working within a customer service environment
- Meet the requirements for working with adolescents (13 – 17) in the relevant Australian State/Territory
Students seeking entry to this course may be subject to an interview process, based on their initial application, to determine their suitability for providing support services to weight management clients.
This course exposes students to the challenge of mentoring clients who may have suffered challenging, emotionally confronting situations. It requires students to have sufficient maturity and work/life experience to provide professional support services within organisational and regulatory requirements.
Students are required to read and interpret medical or allied health practitioner referrals, prepare referrals and weight management plans including the use of entering measurements, weights and times.
